Thailand's progress on combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, 21 Aug 2015

Department of Fisheries, Thailand would like to inform you the update progress on Combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, Thailand as followed:

1.      FAO studies on capacity reduction

Department of Fisheries has been requested by DG MARE for the technical paper of FAO studies on capacity reduction (with annexes) and DOF would like to submit the paper as attached.

2.      CCCIF Notifications

Kindly refer to DOF email on 22 July 2015 informing you ten CCCIF notifications related to combatting IUU fishing were issued. DOF would like to submit the English version of these notifications as attached.

3.  Vessel Monitoring System (VMS)

Until 20 August, 2015, 1662 fishing vessels with fishing capacity > 60 GT operating in Thai waters are installed VMS. In addition, 97 fishing vessels with fishing capacity > 60 GT operating in oversea are installed VMS.  The VMS Control Center of DOF are actively monitored all these vessels.

4.   Traceability

On 17 August, 2015 H.E. Mr. Pitipong Pungboon Na Ayuthaya, the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives chaired the MoU signing ceremony of using Fishing info system among seven government partners consisting of the Royal Thai Navy, the Royal Thai Police, the Marine Department, the Department of Provincial Administration (DoPA), the Department of Employment, the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare, and the Department of Fisheries. This system aims to enhance connection on data sharing among all relevant governmental partners in order to effectively dilute problem on IUU fishing because all data from these aforementioned could be linked and shared amongst the partners. The Fishing Info includes fishing vessel, fishermen and fishing vessel on port-in and port-out information. This would assist in controlling fishing operation in Thai waters in accordance with Thailand National Plan of Action in resolving issue on IUU Fishing.
